Leno lives the lowrider life with a pair of Chevy Impalas

Jay Leno lowrider

Jay Leno gets low in his latest episode of Jay Leno’s Garage by showing off two custom lowriders based on a pair of ’60s Chevrolet Impala classics and talks to some experts in the field. The whole culture surrounding these cars is a product of Southern California; so it makes sense for Golden State Jay to finally put a spotlight on them.

Leno focuses on different flavors of lowriders. First, there is a sinister-looking ’66 Impala coupe with simple black and chrome styling. It’s just a clean-looking vehicle without much bling to attract attention, but it still shows a great eye for detail. On the opposite end of the spectrum, there’s the ’63 Impala convertible shown above with a tuned 409-cubic-inch (6.7-liter) V8 that just screams “look at me!” from every angle. Owner Brandon Brusca says that the paintwork alone took nearly five years to complete. Possibly even more impressive is its hydraulic system made from airplane parts. The attention to detail is pretty incredible, with portions of the suspension featuring engraving that most people would never see.

Jay admits that lowriders aren’t really his style, but that doesn’t keep him from gushing about these classic Chevrolet cars. The amount of work and that goes into them is something that any auto enthusiast ought to appreciate. Scroll down to watch Leno take a cruise.

Trio of cheesy classic VW buses stolen, recovered

Cheese Vans Stolen

Three customized Volkswagen Buses (pictured above) made to look like blocks of Tillamook cheddar cheese are safe again after being stolen on July 12, and two men are in police custody for the alleged theft.

The cheesy cadre of VWs, their custom trailer and a Ford F-350 to haul them were on a promotional tour when they were stolen from a hotel parking lot in Manteca, California. Police began searching for them, and the group of bright orange Volkswagens wasn’t too hard to sniff out. The three vans with an estimated value of $100,000 each were recovered undamaged on July 14 from a storage center in California about 50 miles away from where they were taken, according to Oregon Live. It reports that one of the men arrested rented a space there.

Unfortunately, the trailer and pickup used to haul the classic VWs weren’t so lucky. Prior to finding the vans, police discovered the other vehicles burned out. It appears the alleged thieves tried to turn them into grilled cheese…

Take a trip down Jaguar's memory lane with Xcar

Jaguar sports car history

For decades, Jaguar has been a company of two minds. On one hand, there are its luxurious, British saloon cars. They might be quick, even sporty, but when it comes down to it, they usually put a focus on comfort and accommodations above all. On the other hand, Jag has its sports cars to really get its buyers’ blood pumping. Think about it: the XJ might look pretty sweet, but you know deep down that you would rather take the F-Type for a spirited drive, reveling in its snorty exhaust note. In its latest video, Xcar Films takes us on a very enjoyable history lesson covering some of the Brit brand’s most exciting models ever.

Xcar hits all of the highlights, starting with the often-overlooked C-Type from early ’50s with its somewhat bulbous shape. Things then progress to the drop-dead gorgeous D-Type. The one in this video is actually the first ever made and therefore worth a fortune. Because of that, the host isn’t really able to get too aggressive, but it’s fantastic to get an idea of what it’s like to experience being behind the wheel of this icon. Finally, it ends with a Series 1 E-Type. This was when the classic model was still something of a sports car; instead of the grand tourer that the E-Type became in its later days.

All three of these cars are legends in their own right, and maybe one day the F-Type could be too. Scroll down for a history lesson on some of Jaguar’s best sports cars.

Ferrari 330 P4 is a stunning red bolide

Ferrari 330 P4

There are many beautiful cars in the world, and then there is the Ferrari 330 P4 that outdoes practically all of them. Combining more curves than Christina Hendricks and the singing voice of Adele, it might just be one of the most aesthetically pleasing cars ever made. In its latest video, Petrolicious takes a look at the sole remaining original P4 in existence and talks to the lucky man who gets to drive it.

Ferrari Corsa instructor Nick Longhi has the enviable task about getting behind the wheel of the V12 racer in this video, and he says it doesn’t drive the way you might think. The P4 isn’t out to bite drivers who aren’t paying attention. Instead, he claims that the car just does everything right and helps the person at the controls be that much better.

Historically, the P4 was Ferrari’s attempt in the 1967 season to take on the dominating Ford GT40. The Prancing Horse’s major achievement that year was a 1-2-3 finish in the 24 Hours of Daytona, but it couldn’t quite beat the Ford at the famous race at Le Mans.

Arguably, the later Ferrari 312PB that Petrolicious highlighted a few weeks ago sounds better, but it’s got absolutely nothing on the voluptuously elegant design of the P4. Scroll down to learn about this thoroughbred of a Prancing Horse with some fantastic cinematography.

1979 Dodge Li'l Red Express in Generation Gap showdown with 1933 Ford Pickup

Dodge Lil' Red Express

Auto enthusiasts love a good debate, whether it’s Mustang versus Camaro or Ferrari against Lamborghini. But how about a battle between two very different vintages of classic pickup trucks? In this case, the fight is between a 1979 Dodge Li’l Red Express and a 1933 Ford Model 46 truck with a flathead V8.

The shootout comes courtesy of the internet series Generation Gap, and its concept is super-simple. One guy prefers classics, and the other likes newer rides. They choose a category, pick two vehicles and put them head to head. In this case, neither is exactly modern, though. The Ford is more than old enough to receive Social Security checks, and the Dodge is hardly a young whippersnapper.

Other than both being pickups, these two models were made to serve very different functions. The Li’l Red Express was basically the progenitor of today’s muscle trucks, with a big V8 that made it one of the quickest new models in its day (admittedly, 1979 was a rough time for automotive performance). On the other hand, the ’33 Ford was just meant to work, with little pretense for anything else. One of the hosts describes it as “the simplest, most difficult” vehicle he’s driven because of the tricky double clutchwork necessary to shift gears. Scroll down to watch the video and try to decide which of these two American classics you would rather have in your garage.

Meet the Kanjozoku, Osaka's infamous street racers

Kanjozoku video

Street racing is obviously illegal and incredibly dangerous, but that has never stopped people from doing it. While we don’t hear nearly as much about the scourge of Japanese tuner cars as when The Fast and the Furious first hit theaters over a decade ago, illegal street racing is still bubbling under the surface all over the island nation. An excellent new documentary short from Bowls Films takes a look at the Kanjozoku from Osaka, Japan; a group that claims to be partially responsible for the tuning style known as JDM.

The group gets their name from their preferred route known as the Kanjo. It’s a 4.77-mile long loop of connected highways running right through the city of Osaka. You might expect a hardcore group of illegal Japanese racers to show up with highly tuned Nissan GT-R and Toyota Supra coupes, but the Kanjozoku evidently eschew all of the others in favor of one particular car that they love: the Honda Civic.

According to the video, that vehicle of choice came in part from the city’s location. Osaka was relatively near the one-make Civic races held at Japan’s legendary Suzuka racetrack. The hatchbacks thus became the default weapons for the Kanjozoku’s street battles.

The guys interviewed for the documentary go so far as to claim that their scene created the whole concept of JDM tuning. The whole video is a really interesting portrait of an illegal racing scene crafted out of friendly competition. Scroll down for a brief look at the Kanjozoku of Osaka – it’s worth it.

Imported Land Rovers being seized as part of Federal investigation

Land Rover Defender

Early Tuesday morning, federal authorities from the Department of Homeland Security allegedly seized 40 gray-market Land Rover 90, 110 and Defender SUVs in what is believed to be part of an ongoing case that has already resulted in 20 of the iconic SUVs being taken from their US owners in May of last year.

The important bit of that opening statement is “allegedly,” as at least one of the victims of the seizure claims that the Vehicle Identification Number on his 110, which he purchased last year, is from that of a 1979 to 1984 model, with his particular example being from 1983. Police and the feds, though, apparently think otherwise, arguing that the truck was imported illegally shortly before the unlucky owner purchased it.

Jalopnik has the entire rundown of this sad, depressing story, including first-hand testimony of the seizure from the unfortunate (and probably former) Land Rover owner. Head over and take a look, it’s worth a read.

Nuclear-powered concept cars from the Atomic Age

In the 1950s and early 60s, the dawn of nuclear power was supposed to lead to a limitless consumer culture, a world of flying cars and autonomous kitchens all powered by clean energy. In Europe, it offered the then-limping continent a cheap, inexhaustible supply of power after years of rationing and infrastructure damage brought on by two World Wars.

The development of nuclear-powered submarines and ships during the 1940s and 50s led car designers to begin conceptualizing atomic vehicles. Fueled by a consistent reaction, these cars would theoretically produce no harmful byproducts and rarely need to refuel. Combining these vehicles with the new interstate system presented amazing potential for American mobility.

But the fantasy soon faded. There were just too many problems with the realities of nuclear power. For starters, the powerplant would be too small to attain a reaction unless the car contained weapons-grade atomic materials. Doing so would mean every fender-bender could result in a minor nuclear holocaust. Additionally, many of the designers assumed a lightweight shielding material or even forcefields would eventually be invented (they still haven’t) to protect passengers from harmful radiation. Analyses of the atomic car concept at the time determined that a 50-ton lead barrier would be necessary to prevent exposure.

Although hope is still alive for nuclear-powered cars – engines powered by lasers and Thorium salts have been suggested – it’s amusing to think that there was a time when these cars were seriously considered the future of transportation. Our love affair with nuclear energy has waned considerably since the catastrophes at Chernobyl, Three Mile Island and, most recently, Fukushima.

Take a trip back in time to when creativity was out matched only by naïveté by checking out these nuclear-powered car concepts from automakers like Ford and Studebaker-Packard. Radiation suit not included.

Carpool Deville aims to be the world's fastest hot tub

Carpool Deville

The world needs crazy inventors with wild dreams. While we might not long for the things that they create, their contraptions certainly make the day a little more enjoyable. Take the Carpool Deville as an example. Nobody (well, almost nobody) is asking for a hot tub fashioned from a 1969 Cadillac that is still drivable. But now that you know that such a beast exists, don’t try to tell us you aren’t at least intrigued.

The team behind the six-year-long project has a pretty ingenious setup worked out. The Caddy’s original 472-cubic-inch (7.7-liter) V8 both provides propulsion and heats the water. The interior is entirely replaced with a watertight, fiberglass tub that includes working jets, and the controls are all done by hand.

As if just building a mobile hot tub isn’t enough, the team behind the Carpool Deville plans to take it racing too. Specifically, they intend to go to the Bonneville Salt Flats later this year to make a top speed run while immersed in water at over 100 degrees. They even have a roll cage all set to install to meet the safety requirements there.

Everything appears to be all set to make the run in August. The team recently completed a successful Kickstarter campaign that raised $11,251 from a $10,000 goal to cover transportation expenses. Check out the Kickstarter page for a complete history of the whole project, including a previous attempt at making a carpool, and scroll down to watch their promotional video.
