Lincoln, GMC clean up in AutoPacific Vehicle Satisfaction Awards

Lincoln MKZ

In recent years, there have been a lot of dire pronouncements made about Lincoln’s future, or a lack thereof. But Ford’s premium marque is like the Rocky Balboa of the auto business; every time the company seems ready to go, it comes back for more. Apparently, that dogged persistence is paying off, because the industry analysts at AutoPacific have put a big check in their win column with their newly released 2014 model year vehicle satisfaction survey. And despite recent enmity for its seemingly never-ending recall saga, it appears General Motors knows how to satisfy new owners, too.

In fact, not only was Lincoln named as the premium brand with the highest new owner satisfaction, even scored three models on the list of passenger cars with the most gratified buyers – the MKS, MKZ and MKZ Hybrid.

GM’s stable of brands was also among the top companies in this year’s survey. GMC was named the top popular brand by AutoPacific, with its Sierra pickup and Acadia crossover singled out for awards in their segments. Chevrolet also did incredibly well, with more cars on the list than any other brand. The Corvette, Camaro, Sonic and Impala all made the cut in their respective categories.

AutoPacific bases its awards on the opinions from new owners based on 50 vehicle attributes, with this year’s results being derived from over 92,000 responses. This year, the 2014 Mercedes S-Class is receiving laurels for the highest satisfaction score ever recorded by the company. Scroll down to read about all the winners in the announcement below.

Adam Carolla is world's the least helpful test drive co-pilot

Adam Carolla rides shotgun

If you were going to test drive a new car, who would you want to take with you? Your spouse? A friend? Maybe an automotive journalist? Well take it from us: there’s one of us riding shotgun just about every time we go to drive anything, and we’re not all we’re cracked up to be.

How about a celebrity comedian? Well, that largely depends on which comedian we’re talking about here. Some – say, Jerry Seinfeld or Jay Leno, for example – might be more helpful than others, being more or less schooled in the finer points of the modern automobile. Adam Carolla might seem like he belongs on that list too, but in this latest video for a friends at Edmunds.com, the one-time host of The Car Show on Speed TV seems bent on being as comedically intrusive as possible. Which may be funny, but helpful? Not so much. See what we mean in the video below, and the next time you go to test drive a new car, you just might find the world’s most popular podcast host climbing in with you.

Chevy outpacing Toyota, Honda, Ford in subcompact sales

2013 Chevrolet Sonic RS

2013 Chevrolet SonicYears ago, the subcompact car market was mostly made up of under-powered, poorly featured little penalty boxes, but over the course of the past decade, this segment has absolutely flourished. Cars like the Honda Fit are something most people would happily drive. And it appears that Chevrolet is really figuring things out with booming popularity from its one-two punch of small models with the Spark and Sonic.

A new analysis from Automotive News finds that Chevy is outselling Toyota, Honda, Ford and Hyundai in the segment and sales are up year-over-year, so far. The Spark is growing 28 percent over last year to 18,591 vehicles from January through May, and the Sonic is up 8 percent to 40,672 cars sold in that time. Last year, the Spark also beat forecasts for its first 12 months on sale after introduction by 35 percent.

Why? First, people actually want them. Both cars are available with high tech features like Chevy’s MyLink infotainment system with Siri. Second, they fill two gaps in the subcompact market. The Spark is a tiny urban commuter for people who only want basic transportation. That allows the slightly larger and more powerful Sonic to be a bit sportier and more luxurious, especially with its RS and Dusk models. According to AN, the differentiation means discounts are less necessary on the Sonic because a cheaper alternative is already in the showroom for buyers.

The Bowtie appears eager to capitalize on this tiny vehicle success, too. The Chevy Trax, riding on the same platform and with the Sonic’s 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, is coming to the US market in the near future to offer a third model in the class. The next-generation Spark was also already spotted testing with a redesigned face in Europe, for a rumored 2015 debut. The same scuttlebutt pegged the next Sonic for a likely 2016 introduction. The company definitely appears poised to grow in the diminutive segment.

'Car Wars' says Ford, Honda to pick up share, Fiat-Chrysler ambitions downplayed

Auto Sales

Don’t look for a tremendous shifts in automotive market share over the next three years because it might not be coming. That’s at least according to the annual Car Wars report by John Murphy, from Bank of America Merrill Lynch Global Research.

In the report’s analysis of automakers’ market share from 2013 to 2017, it predicts only small changes among the major companies. Ford and Honda see the biggest positive effect with an estimated 0.5 percent increase in their shares over the next three years; to 16.2 percent and 10.3 percent respectively. On the flip side, European automakers and Nissan are expected to lose 0.2 percent each to fall to 8.3 percent and 7.8 percent each respectively. The rest of the industry is predicted to hold steady as it is now.

The biggest loser in that prediction might be Fiat-Chrysler Automobiles. The report certainly throws a wet blanket on its plan for significant gains in market share. Murphy told The Detroit News that the company’s goal was “almost unattainable.”

To make its growth prediction, the report favors changes in market share because it’s often an indicator of profitability. In the Ford and Honda cases, increases are due to the expected replacement of a larger percentage of their lineups with new models, compared to competitors. While shares might hold steady, the number of options for buyers is reported to increase significantly to 48 new models in 2015, up from 36 this year, according to The News. Most popular among them will be trucks and crossovers, hardly a surprise.

Obviously, this report is based on forecasts, estimates and predictions, and one catastrophe, whether it’s natural or manmade, could knock it all out of whack. Unless that happens, change appears unlikely.

2015 Ford Mustang gets pricing, configurator and less weight than expected

Ford Mustang

2015 Ford Mustang ConfiguratorIt’s here; it’s finally here. No more speculating or looking at dealer order guides, the configurator for the 2015 Ford Mustang is finally online. That means you should put down whatever you’re doing and build your new ‘Stang. Weight data for the new model has also leaked out, and while there is an increase, it’s less than previously rumored.

The basic V6 coupe carries a base price of $23,600, plus an additional $825 destination charge for all models. Upgrading to the 2.3-liter Ecoboost costs $25,170, and the Ecoboost Premium is $29,170. If you need a V8 in your life, the Mustang GT is $32,100 or $36,100 with the Premium package. That puts the starting price up about $1,000 over the previous generation for the V6, but the turbocharged four-cylinder starts about $1,400 less than the V6 Premium, which is no longer available. Prices for both V8 models jumped about $1,000, as well.

If you need the convertible Mustang, the V6 starts at $29,100, excluding destination, $1,590 more than last year. The Ecoboost Premium ‘vert is $34,670, and the GT droptop is $41,600.

In other positive, Mustang-related news, a leaked dealer manual, according to Mustang 6G, is revealing the official weight for the new model. It shows manual vehicles weighing 3,526 pounds for the V6, 3,517 pounds for the Ecoboost, and 3,704 pounds for the GT. Also, automatic models weigh 3,529 pounds for the V6, 3,512 for the four-cylinder and 3,727 for the V8. If accurate, it means increases of less than 100 pounds across the board. That’s much better than the earlier 300-pound gain rumors. Now, get over to that configurator and start building. Have fun.

Has the auto industry hit peak hybrid?

Toyota Prius V

Hybrids are known for their great fuel economy and low emissions, but it looks like given current market conditions, only about three percent of new car consumers are willing to pay the premium for them. A new study from IHS/Polk finds that the hybrid market share among overall US auto sales are falling, despite more models with the technology on sale than ever before.

The study examined new car registrations in March from 2009 through 2014. In that time, the auto industry grew from 24 to 47 hybrid models available to consumers, but market share for the powertrain remained almost stagnant in that time. As of 2009, hybrids held 2.4 percent of the market; it fell slightly to 2.3 percent in 2010 and grew to 3.3 percent in 2013. However, 2014 showed a drop back to 3 percent. Overall hybrid sales have been growing since 2010, but they just aren’t keeping up with the total auto market.

According to IHS/Polk, this isn’t what you would expect to see. Usually, each new model in the market brings along with it a boost in sales. The growth in hybrid models 2009 to 2014 should have shown a larger increase in share for the segment.

The study also looked at the top hybrid models for each March in terms of their market share in the segment. The Toyota Prius has been the leader every year with a high of 55.29 percent in 2011. It stands at 23.06 percent in 2014, but when the Prius C and Prius V are added it grows to about 37 percent. The Ford Fusion Hybrid had the second-highest share in 2014 at 10.95 percent.

According to Automotive News, the stagnation of hybrid growth comes predominantly from consumers being desensitized to current gas prices. For the most part, they have remained stable for many consumers making the added cost of the models harder to justify.

Lexus boots up early NX configurator

Lexus is ramping up to launch its NX luxury compact crossover. Its international website just launched a teaser page for the CUV that shows off the available models and some nifty new photos of the upcoming vehicle on location. The site also includes an early configurator to allow potential customers to imagine their future NX.

Unfortunately, the configurator is quite bare bones at the moment. It only allows users to choose from 4 trims, 10 colors and 3 wheel designs. You can’t do anything to the interior, and there are no options. Pricing is still a mystery as well.

We do know that in the US the NX is offered with either the company’s new 2.0-liter four-cylinder, turbocharged engine with a six-speed automatic or a 2.5-liter four-cylinder hybrid powertrain. The F Sport package is also available with either engine for a dash more sport in your crossover.

With Lexus already showing renewed competitiveness, adding a compact CUV to the range might be a very good move. It’s still going to be a few months wait, though. According to Lexus US spokesperson Allison Takahashi to Autoblog, the release for the NX is scheduled for the late fall. Pricing and a full configurator will be released around that time, as well.

2015 Honda Fit configurator will let you have it your way

Honda Fit Configurator

Honda has released the online configurator for the all-new, 2015 Fit – a vehicle that was scheduled to launch earlier, but was delayed until this month. As is the case with the rest of the Japanese manufacturer’s builders, there’s not a lot to this one – pick a trim, transmission (where applicable) and a color, and you’re all set.

The 2015 Fit will come in three grades, with the base LX offering up both manual and continuously variable transmission, air conditioning, Bluetooth, USB connectivity, a 60/40 split-rear seat and a four-speaker stereo, among lesser items. The LX starts at $15,525, not counting a $790 destination charge. Next up is the $17,435 EX, which adds 16-inch wheels, push-button start and a seven-inch display audio system complete with Pandora and text-message functionality. Like the LX, the EX can be had with either a manual or CVT, with the two-pedal setup commanding an $800 premium, regardless of trim.

The top-of-the-line EX-L, however, cannot be had with a manual. Getting the king of the Fit line will lock you into the CVT, although it adds an assortment of cow-based products, in the form of heated leather seats and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Heated wing mirrors are also included in the $19,800 starting price. Navigation is an optional goodie, which tacks $1,000 onto the price and is only available on the EX-L. HD Radio and satellite radio are also included on the EX-L.

Hop over to Honda’s consumer page and have a look.

Alfa Romeo franchises 86 dealers across North America

Alfa Romeo’s return to North America has been a long time coming, which has given us plenty of time to wonder: Will the now-merged FiatChrysler let Fiat dealers sell Alfas, or will the shapely Italians be available in Maserati dealers? The answer we’ve been waiting for? Both.

Auburn Hills has just released the list of 86 initial dealers that will be authorized to sell the Alfa Romeo 4C (Autoblog senior editor Seyth Miersma is driving one today in San Francisco, incidentally), setting the groundwork for a larger Alfa Romeo lineup to follow. The list includes 82 dealers across 33 states and four more in Canada. Though the vast majority are expanding upmarket from Fiat studios, a few are branching downmarket from Maserati dealers – not a one of them, in case you were wondering, having expanded from a Ferrari showroom.

The highest concentration of dealers will be found in California, Texas and Florida, but while you might have thought Little Italy would be a prime location, there won’t be a single dealer in Manhattan. Not in any of the five boroughs, in fact, so if you live in New York, you’ll have to trek out to Larchmont in Westchester or Somerville, New Jersey, to place your order. Of course, that’s at least the case for now, as Alfa plans to eventually expand to over 300 dealers in North America. In the meantime, you can check out the full list in the press release below to see how close you are to a new Alfa dealer.

2015 Hyundai Sonata configurator powers up

2015 Hyundai Sonata

Eager to get your hands on a new Hyundai Sonata? We could hardly blame you. With more mature styling and better equipment for less than the model that preceded it, the new Sonata makes a compelling case, even in a market segment this competitive that includes such rivals as the Nissan Altima, Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Mazda6, Ford Fusion, Chevy Malibu, Chrysler 200, Volkswagen Passat and Kia Optima.

The first units are just arriving at dealers now, but if your local showroom doesn’t have one for you to check out just yet, we’ve got good news for you as Hyundai has just launched the car’s online configurator. The system lets you choose from four trim levels, nine exterior colors, a couple of equipment packages and an assortment of accessories to make your Sonata yours.

Pictured here is the top-of-the-line Sonata Sport 2.0T that starts at $29,385 (inclusive of delivery), but the base Sonata starts under $22k. Spec yours (or any new Hyundai, for that matter) in the online configurator linked here.
