Tesla lowers Model S lease price, adds 3-month 'happiness guarantee'

Tesla Model S

Tesla Motors is offering an enticing deal for potential buyers who might not be entirely sure whether they actually want to own a Model S for the long term. A deal through US Bank not only lowers the cost to lease the EV but also turns leasing the brand’s electric sedan into a long-term rental.

Curious buyers who lease a Model S are now able to return it in the first three months with no penalties and with the remaining payments waived, something Tesla is calling the “happiness guarantee.” CEO Elon Musk announced the deal on the company’s blog, and he said the payments were also as much as 25 percent lower because US Bank “has a much lower cost of capital than us.” Currently, a Tesla lease starts at around $800 and can be up to $1,300, with down payments around $6,500. Tesla leasing is available in 38 US states (full list below).

Of course, there is a catch for the offer. If people turn in their Model S within three months, they can’t immediately lease another one. Musk doesn’t say how long the wait is.

The new leasing deal isn’t a solution for those owners who want their Model S to always have the latest and greatest features. However, for folks who are on the fence about one of these electric, luxury sedans, the offer might prove too enticing to pass up. Of course, Tesla has a history of announcing lease details only to change them later, so we’re not sure how long this deal will last or if it’ll get better in a month.

Aging Prius, dropping gas prices putting hurt on hybrid, EV sales

Toyota Prius

“As Prius represents by far the biggest chunk of the hybrid marketplace, where Prius goes, the segment goes,” – Ed Kim, Autopacific

Fuel prices in the US have been tumbling for the last several weeks, with the average price of a gallon of gas at $3.120 as of October 20, according to the US Energy Information Administration. That price reflects a serious recent drop from $3.299 on October 6. Reports have even suggested that those low numbers might not change for a little while, perhaps as long as years. While drivers certainly love paying less at the pump, the change may be hurting the market for more fuel-efficient models, including the Toyota Prius.

According to a report from National Public Radio, sales of hybrids, plug-ins and EVs are down around 5 percent for the year, but trucks and SUVs have seen a 17 and 20 percent improvement, respectively. Autoblog Green’s By the Numbers reports indicate similar figures of around a 5.4 percent drop so far in 2014. In fact, as of September, green-car sales have endured their fourth straight month of declines. That segment of the market fell 11 percent year-over-year in August and 9.6 percent in September.

“As Prius represents by far the biggest chunk of the hybrid marketplace, where Prius goes, the segment goes,” Ed Kim, Vice President of Industry Analysis at AutoPacific tells Autoblog. That paints a bleak picture for hybrids, because at the moment, the Prius is doing pretty poorly. For the year through September, its sales are down 11.39 percent, off by 10.15 percent for just that month.

Of course, the Prius also has things twice has hard. Not only does it have to deal with the falling fuel prices like the rest of its segment-mates, it’s about to be replaced. Rumors suggest that some versions of the next generation could get as much as 60 miles per gallon. “I do think that the next Prius will reignite interest in the segment, especially if it offers the 10-percent fuel economy improvement that Toyota has been claiming,” said Kim.

That improvement still might make things tough, though. According to Autotrader senior analyst Michelle Krebs speaking to Autoblog via email, “The next-generation Prius – and other hybrids and electrics – have a big challenge against traditional gas vehicles, which keep improving with every version in terms of fuel economy.”

Meanwhile, the overall US auto market is booming. As of August, the Seasonally Adjusted Sales Rate showed the best figures since 2006, at about 17.5 million units. “Right now, gas prices are dropping, sales of fuel-sippers are also falling (or at least not growing) and sales of pickup trucks and SUVs, including big ones, are way up,” said Krebs. Scroll down to listen to the full report from NPR.

How China is at war with its pickup trucks

Great Wall Wingle5

Create a law, and people try to find some way to get around it. That’s basically a fact of life whether you’re in the US or the People’s Republic of China. For example, recently in the PRC, a man attempted to convert his pickup into a sedan to avoid road tolls, and photos of the vehicle became a story in Chinese media. The whole incident shined a light on the government’s antagonism towards trucks (like the Great Wall Wingle 5 pictured above).

According to Automotive News, this intrepid driver made his attempt during the National Day earlier in October. For the holiday, China removed its road tolls for sedans, which made it free for them to drive on highways. This fellow apparently had places to go, and he converted his four-door truck into a “sedan.” Although, his undertaking was pretty mediocre by just installing a sloping bed cover with a hatch on the back of his pickup. The endeavor didn’t fool police, either, because they fined him for the scheme. Still, it was a noble effort, we suppose.

Not many owners are willing to go to the lengths of this guy, but trucks in China are fighting an uphill battle for popularity. According to Automotive News, a legal loophole means that in some cities, all pickups are classified as commercial vehicles, and they are kept from entering. Those limits keep sales to less than two percent of the country’s massive auto market, and those numbers are continuing to fall. No wonder automakers like Great Wall want to sell models in the more pickup-friendly US.

EPA to scrutinize auto fuel economy tests, issue revised guidelines

EPA Proposes Changes To Ethanol Mandate In Gasoline

Following the lowering of estimated fuel economy figures from companies like Ford, Hyundai, Kia and even a handful of Mercedes-Benz sedans in the recent past, the Environmental Protection Agency is cracking down by mandating new mileage testing procedures by the end of the year, after first considering some changes months ago. The improved evaluations should make the numbers that buyers see on the window sticker of a vehicle closer to what they experience in the real world.

The most significant alteration is issuing specific protocols governing the coast-down test, according to Automotive News. The examination gathers data on things like drag, rolling resistance and drivetrain friction as a vehicle cruises from 80 miles per hour to a complete stop. That information is then used to program dynamometers for further driving analyses, but currently, the exact procedure varies by company. Inaccurate figures from the assessment were reportedly responsible for Hyundai and Kia’s fuel economy mark down and one of the changes for the Ford C-Max.

The other big change closes a loophole that allows automakers to test the fuel economy for a single model and then apply it to others with the same powertrain and weight class. This is the same issue that forced Ford to re-rate the C-Max in 2013.

According to Automotive News, the agency is also planning to continue with successful policies like auditing the fuel economy of more models to make sure they match manufacturers’ ratings. It may also force companies to double-check mileage results from pre-production examples against the final version of a vehicle.

Mercedes has a new flagship coupe coming to a dealership near you, and we just tool the keys to one such machine, a 2015 S550 Coupe Edition 1, to be exact, all over the great State of Rhode Island. The autumn weather was lovely, the changing colors were beautiful, and the newest Benz was pretty much a perfect vehicle with which to take it all in. Read on for all the details.

Michigan Governor Rick Snyder‘Anti-Tesla’ bill signed into law in Michigan

Is House Bill 5605 accurately described as being ‘anti-Tesla?’ Well, that depends on who you’re talking to. Michigan Governor Rick Snyder doesn’t seem to think so, and State Representative Aric Nesbitt, who introduced the bill itself, has specifically stated that it’s not directed at the electric-vehicle manufacturer. Tesla, for its part, seems to disagree, as do a large number of its adoring fans.

putting fuel in carEPA to mandate new mileage test procedures

“Your mileage may vary.” We all know what it means, and we all expect at least some variance between what we actually record with our own cars versus what was originally displayed on that car’s window sticker when it was new. Thing is, some automakers have recently been found to have been rating cars after testing with inaccurate procedures, and the EPA is planning to put that problem to an end.

Porsche 918 Spyder already almost sold out?

Porsche 918 Spyder

Still planning on getting your hands on a Porsche 918 Spyder? You’d better act quickly, because word has it that the hybrid hypercar is nearly sold out.

While Porsche has reportedly only delivered a little over 30 of the 918 examples of the Spyder it plans to manufacture in total, Automotive News says that production is sold out through late March or early April – just a few months shy of when production is set to wrap in July.

That’s pretty impressive for a car with a base price of almost $850,000, especially one requiring a $200,000 deposit just to get your name on the list. Still, that sum is significantly less than its competitors get for the McLaren P1 or LaFerrari, both of which sell for over a million (if you can actually get on one at that price), though in fairness, production of each is limited to less than half of the 918 Spyder.

2015 Dodge Charger priced from $27,995, Hellcat from $63,995*

2015 Dodge Charger Hellcat

Ladies and gentlemen, let’s get the most salient bit of information out of the way right off the bat: $63,995*. That’s the amount of money Dodge dealers will be asking for (at the very least, naturally) for a 2015 Charger Hellcat (*plus $995 for destination on all pricing figures). That rather reasonable sum will bring home its buyer a 6.2-liter Hemi V8 engine boasting a supercharger to post such gaudy figures as 707 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque, leading to a top speed of 204 miles per hour to go along with an NHRA-certified quarter-mile time of 11.0 seconds.

With that out of the way, the rest of the 2015 Dodge Charger pricing information breaks down as follows: $27,995 will deliver a sedan with a 292-horsepower 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine, mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Moving up one step of the ladder nets the buyer an SXT model with the same engine, but a nicer chunk of technology and optional equipment for a $2,000 premium. All-wheel drive adds another $3,000. Hemi V8-powered R/T models now boast an eight-speed transmission bolted to the same well-loved 370-horsepower engine as before, for a base price of $32,995.

The SRT 392 model that had hitherto been the top-performing Charger brings with it an asking price of $47,385 while bargain hunters can equip a Charger R/T Scat Pack machine with that same 485-horsepower 6.4-liter Hemi, albeit with somewhat less posh interior bits and pieces, the removal of the 392’s adjustable suspension and hi-po wheel and tire package for $39,995.

There are a few other ways to order a Charger in 2015, and we suggest you read all about them in the press release below. We don’t have to tell you how amazing it is that you can now mosey on down to your local Dodge dealer and order a 707-hp sedan for under $64,000. Neither must it be said that the SRT’s 485 ponies are nothing to sneeze at. In any case, we’re officially basking in the golden age of horsepower.

Recent Tesla Model S buyers frustrated over new features

Tesla Model S

Tesla wowed the motoring world when it recently unveiled the all-wheel drive, dual-motor D version that added power and range to the already well-regarded Model S. At the same time, the company showed off a new suite of safe-driving tech like a forward-looking camera, radar and ultrasonic sensors to come standard on all models. While the new features might attract some new buyers into the fold, for a few current owners the upgrades aren’t coming as a pleasant surprise at all. Some of them are rallying for Tesla to fix things somehow.

These disgruntled owners aren’t upset about what any of the new features actually do; in fact, they love them. The issue is Tesla’s secrecy before the reveal. A few of these folks bought their cars just a few months ago, some even in September, according to The San Jose Mercury News. If the upgrades had been publicized earlier, then they would have waited to order versions with the latest and greatest tech.

Some of them are already on the web lodging their complaints. According to The San Jose Mercury News, the website Change.org has competing petitions asking Tesla to find a way to retrofit the features, which the company says isn’t possible, and another requesting the automaker to ignore the complainers.

Among traditional automakers there are usually several months between a new model’s announcement, and it actually going on sale. In Tesla’s case, the first official teaser before the launch of the D came about a week before the reveal and hinted at something else at the time, which became the A. Should the company have given prospective buyers greater warning that two big features were on the way? Let us know what you think in Comments.

Here's how people spec'd their C7 Corvettes in 2014

2014 Chevrolet Corvette

The Z51 option pack was hugely popular full-stop, with a total of 21,105 examples in all bodystyles ordered.

For its first year out of the gate, the 2014 Chevrolet C7 Corvette Stingray did very well for itself, selling 37,288 units worldwide with 34,678 of the new sports cars hitting the market in the US alone. In fact, the total number was one of the best figures for the Corvette in the modern era. But the full breakdown of all the 2014 C7’s sales data has hit the web from The National Corvette Museum blog, and it has given us the chance to be nosy and find out what people really want from this latest model.

Individually, buyers seemed to really want some extra performance from their new Vette, because the coupe with the Z51 package was the most popular model, with 15,431 made (41.4 percent), followed by the standard coupe with 11,134 built (29.9 percent). The Z51 option pack was hugely popular full-stop, with a total of 21,105 examples in all bodystyles ordered with its added performance pieces – that’s 56.6 percent of the year’s production. If anything, we’re surprised the bargain-priced grouping didn’t net an even higher percentages.

Despite people clearly wanting performance, customers’ transmission preferences unsurprisingly skewed towards automatics. The six-speed auto had 24,088 orders (64.6 percent), while the remaining 13,200 were seven-speed manuals. When the ‘Vette was closer to launch, the seven-speed represented about 38 percent of the production, so it only fell a few percent over the entire model year.

Interestingly, some options were practically a universal choice among buyers. Some 31,173 cars (83.6 percent) had the box for the optional performance exhaust ticked. Also, 30,427 people (81.6 percent) ponied up for navigation.

When shopping for colors, customers really wanted to own a little red Corvette. Torch Red was the most popular paint shade with 7,197 made. In fact, it, Arctic White and Black were the three most popular hues, representing 51.7 percent of total orders. The least wanted was Lime Rock Green with just 1,566 sold, and it has been discontinued for the 2015 model year.

These details are just scratching the surface at all of the info to be gleaned from this data. Check out the The National Corvette Museum blog for the full table.

Kids 39% more likely to buy parents' car brand

Filed under:

CHINA-AUTO-SHOW

Children are a blank slate. They draw their habits, behaviors and mannerisms from their parents. If you subscribe to that viewpoint, then this study out of Michigan State University won’t really come as a surprise. According to Soren Anderson, and MSU economist, kids are 39 percent more likely to buy cars from the brands their parents support.

So, if your parents buy Jeeps, there’s a strong correlation that you’re going to end up behind a seven-slat grille at some point. Same goes for Cadillac owners, Toyota fans and Bimmerphiles.

The on-going study drew this correlation after surveying 4,300 adult children and their 2,600 parents. The nationwide surveys were held every two years between 1999 and 2011 and brands were bunched by ownership, so for example, rather than listing Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick and GMC independently, General Motors was the sole option.

“In theory, these findings could change the way automakers price and market their cars,” Anderson claims. “Is this really about the cars or could it be other factors, like parents and children tending to be more similar to each other than other people? We’re pretty sure it has something to do with the cars themselves.”

The results of Anderson’s study will be published in the Journal of Industrial Economics. Scroll down for a press release on the topic.
