Auto sales skid in April as demand falls and competition intensifies

Filed under:
,

Major automakers on Tuesday posted lower U.S. new vehicle sales in April as consumer demand continued to weaken and competition intensified following a lengthy boom for the industry. Auto sales have been on a bit of a roller coaster ride this year, with a weak performance in February followed by a jump in sales for some automakers in March.

You’ve got stuff to move: toys or gear for work. It could be a fishing boat, a utility trailer, or a load of gravel for the work site. If you work for a large company, the vehicle you use to do these things for work might be a fleet truck, in which case unless you’re the fleet manager you won’t have much of a say in what you drive. But if you’re self-employed or buying a vehicle for personal use, the range of choices can be nearly overwhelming. There are vans, midsize pickups, SUVs, and full-siz

Filed under:

So Ford is getting out of the sedan business in North America. Not a big surprise. All the signs have been there for months, going back to when the automaker announced it was offshoring Focus production and canceling plans to redesign the Fusion. And yet it seems strange that a Detroit Three car company would no longer sell Americans that most American of conveyances — the basic family sedan.

Yet, we’ve just had our first drive in the 2019 Toyota Avalon, and if anything has a chance of rejuvenating the segment a bit, it’s an all-new version of what has long been the segment’s benchmark.
